Thanks to the charity Afghan Heroes, a decorated serviceman has recently returned from a timeshare resort holiday in the Canary Islands.
Captain Anthony Harris jetted off to Tenerife’s as guests of CLC World Resort Sunningdale Village with wife Elizabeth and children Felix and Emily for some much-deserved rest and relaxation.
Their break in the sun was part of the Give Us Time programme. Launched in June by the charity Afghan Heroes, which was set up by mothers as a legacy to the sons and daughters who lost their lives in Afghanistan. Give Us Time provides holidays to help families adjust to life after combat.
After losing the lower part of his left leg in an explosion while in Afghanistan, Captain Harris has dedicated himself to raising funds for service charities, like Afghan Heroes, and supporting families whose lives have been changed by combat.
Captain Harris said: “Give Us Time is a great initiative to allow families time and space to enjoy each others company again after what can be harrowing times and truly life changing situations.
“My tour of Afghanistan was my sixth in seven years. During each my family worried about what was going to happen, and when I was injured it was a huge shock.
“After the tumultuous last three years this was a welcome break to bond as a family, away from the recovery process.”
Afghan Heroes launch Give Us Time
Club La Costa (CLC) World managing director Martyn Aldridge said: “We are delighted to play our part in making available holiday accommodation. Our service personnel do a difficult job and it is important to show our appreciation and support the families who have lost loved ones or who are coping with long term injury.”
Denise Harris, founder of Afghan Heroes, whose son Lee lost his life in Afghanistan, said: “This fantastic response and generosity means that we can now help a huge number of families who will be able to spend quality time together to readjust and relax in a stress-free environment.
“The holiday that Captain Harris and his family enjoyed thanks to CLC World is the first of a programme that will benefit so many service families whose lives have been affected and in some cases completely changed.
“The launch of Give Us Time and the fantastic reaction from the public and companies means we can help many families and make a real difference to helping them readjust together.”
Graham Wilding, CLC World’s commercial director for the Canaries said: “It’s an honour to welcome Captain Harris and his family to Sunningdale Village. We are delighted to be the first resort offering a holiday for the Give Us Time project.”
