When I found out there was a tour of Salzburg exploring Austrian beer, my mind conjured less than cultured images of a bar crawl. But as I discovered Salzburg, which has long been regarded as one of Austria’s major tourist destinations, has a long brewing tradition and the Austrian beer tour was set to be a far more sophisticated affair.

One of the benefits of apartment stays is that they give you the chance to live like a local but would I be able to say “Ich bin ein Berliner”?

It’s not often that someone comes up with music to your ears. But the LOISIUM Wine & Spa Resort in Austria had us at “Hello” in a Jerry Maguire sort of way. Not only does this architectural masterpiece of a hotel have an extensive spa, but as the name suggests, the LOISIUM hotel has a dedicated focus on wine.

Arriving at the Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl in the ski resort of Obergurgl in Austria on a cold January evening was anything but dreary. The metres of crisp snow, bathed the whole town in twinkly vitality – streetlights reflecting white, yellow and more from the snow.

We didn’t know what a heurigen was but were promised an unforgettable night if we visited one. Setting out from our hotel the LOISIUM wine & spa resort, we huddled together against the might of an Austrian winter, and wound our slippery way up the snowy country roads to what would be a night to remember.

“Sal saved her whole life for this one trip,” says my new found train companion, Jill, a 65-year-old woman from Victoria, Australia. “She got on at Sydney, got off at Perth and took the next flight back to Sydney, fulfilling a lifelong ambition. She was happy,” says Jill. We are on-board the Indian Pacific train to make the four thousand kilometre journey across the vastness of Australia.

On meeting restaurateur Vince Hawkins I couldn’t help but ask: “How did a man from Halewood in Merseyside end up amid the historic charm of Sauze d’Oulx?” We were dining at Ristorante Del Falco which Vince runs with his wife Annette and the ever-attentive waitress Petra, where we were enjoying another night of delicious food and entertaining tales.

The mere mention of Tenerife to those who know its history, will normally engender thoughts of British holidaymakers, supping copious amounts of lager while eating good old fry ups and reading The Sun newspaper as they gradually begin to resemble red lobsters.
