Garachico’s volcanic past hasn’t just defined its present but completely reshaped its landscape. Just over 300 years ago lava flows from Mount Teide devastated the town, destroyed its thriving port and plunged this once rich and sophisticated town into great hardship. However, thankfully its historical heart is still there, as are examples of Canarian architecture.

Tenerife isn’t especially known for its wildlife – flora or fauna, particularly in the arid conditions of the south of the island, however the lush green north has botanical gardens that really make it stand out. The botanical gardens of Puerto de la Cruz or Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava to be precise, are home to a hugely impressive array of plants from the four corners of the globe.

Tenerife is oft dismissed as a purely sun, sea and sand destination but the island has enough culture and history to keep even the keenest culture vulture happy and while one of its towns La Orotava may not be upper most in your mind when making holiday plans, this northern delight should not be missed.

When looking for the best beaches in Tenerife you wouldn’t ordinarily journey north. Most sources of travel information would have you believe that the best beaches in Tenerife lie in the island’s south coast resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas. But make for the island’s green covered north and you’ll find plenty of great beaches in and around its capital Santa Cruz and it’s main northern resort of Puerto de la Cruz as well as towns like Garachico.

Most visitors to Tenerife head to the southern coast but the island has much to offer in the lush green north, as we discovered in our stay at timeshare resort Club Casablanca, in Puerto de la Cruz. Unlike the lively resorts of the south such as Los Cristianos or Playa De Las Americas Club Casablanca in Puerto Del La Cruz, Tenerife is in the north of the island and we were delighted to find an oasis of calm set in a region of fascinating contrasts.
