When looking for the best beaches in Tenerife you wouldn’t ordinarily journey north. Most sources of travel information would have you believe that the finest seaside stretches lie in the island’s south coast resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas.
But make for the island’s green covered north and you’ll find some lovely coastline in and around its capital Santa Cruz and it’s main northern resort of Puerto de la Cruz as well as towns like Garachico.
As the southern beaches are well documented, here we reveal some of the best beaches in Tenerife, well, in the north anyway.
Playa Martinez may not be the largest beach in Puerto de la Cruz, but it’s one of the closest sandy beach to the town centre and, if you fancy a change of scenery it’s also very close to the town’s excellent lido.
Playa Jardin is arguably one of the best beaches in Tenerife’s north coast and the most popular in Puerto de la Cruz.
Not only is this a long, enticing stretch of black sand (don’t forget Tenerife is a volcanic island so the only naturally occurring sand is black), but it is set against a back drop of tropical gardens.
A popular beach with the locals in Garachico is Playa el Muelle – a bay sheltered by rocks next to the town’s harbour and a short walk from it’s outstanding natural rock pools.
Here children joyfully leap from walls and rocks into the Atlantic depths below.
Looking for stretches of golden sand? The north of the island can deliver here too. Playa Teresitas, just outside Santa Cruz, has to be one of the best beaches in Tenerife. It’s man-made, from sand shipped in from the Sahara, but it’s really very pretty and popular with in-the-know locals on weekends.
